I think that "strategic cooperation" may be a bit of retconning on GPD's part? I was using a Pocket when Mate first published the images (for the Pocket at the time), and there was no talk about this being in any way official. That said, in my experience they don't refuse you warranty or anything if your device has a different OS on it, so on that side there is no issue putting an "unofficial" OS on your hardware.
