- wincy 6y agoYeah it’s bizarre to me. Then again governments aren’t known for being the most tech savvy.
- varispeed 6y agoI have not updated my phone in two years, because I know the update I am going to get will disable call recording functionality. Phone works fine except that I cannot disable the notification about the update that pops up randomly in hope that I'll click to accept by mistake. Also maybe that's why my phone works well as there are no updates that would slow things down.
- dfxm12 6y agoAt least in the US, Apple has biggest market share by vendor at almost 50%. Samsung is a somewhat distant 2nd [0]. I would assume Italy is similar. You go against the biggest company to have the biggest impact, get the biggest settlement and set the biggest precedent. 0 - https://www.statista.com/statistics/620805/smartphone-sales-market-share-in-the-us-by-vendo https://www.statista.com/statistics/620805/smartphone-sales-...
- ashtonkem 6y agoGoing against Apple on this case also makes it more likely that they’ll lose, and make the opposite precedent. For all of its faults, Apple is very good at supporting old phones; they’re probably the hardest manufacturer to sue on this dimension.
- salsadip 6y agoIn Europe, iPhones are less common than the US. Italy has between 23-27% market share [0], in Germany it is at about 20% [1]. Just FYI [0] https://www.statista.com/statistics/622758/apple-ios-market-share-in-italy/ https://www.statista.com/statistics/622758/apple-ios-market-... [1] https://www.statista.com/statistics/462009/iphone-sales-market-share-germany/ https://www.statista.com/statistics/462009/iphone-sales-mark...
- kergonath 6y agoSamsung is dominant in the EU (around 40%, followed by Apple and Huawei around 20% each): https://www.statista.com/statistics/632599/smartphone-market-share-by-vendor-in-europe/ https://www.statista.com/statistics/632599/smartphone-market... I can’t seem to get numbers for Italy (without a pay wall), but I’d expect Huawei and Samsung to be stronger than in the EU overall because of their phones’ lower average price.
- notsureaboutpg 6y agoBut Android phones can run other software if the consumer chooses. I also think the consumer isn't buying "Android" the software. They are buying Samsung's phone or Google's phone the hardware and it comes preinstalled with Android but that's not part of what you are paying for. Whereas, with Apple they are throttling the performance of the phone you paid for with software you cannot remove or swap out or opt out of (since you didn't know the software update comes with degraded performance). I also think this way of thinking is shortsighted and missing the big picture, but it's probably the thought process here.
- mytailorisrich 6y agoTime-limited updates and support is not a problem. It does not prevent you from using the product for as long as you want. From the article it seems that they allege that Apple is shortening the life of its products by degrading the user experience over time.
- JeanMarcS 6y agoI guess it's because with iOS you only have one company in front of you, when with Android, there are several phone making companies. I don't know if Google can be held responsible if a company decide to stop upgrades on their own devices.
- mvanbaak 6y ago'Apple has a lot of money, we want money, lets sue Apple and maybe we get money'
- fulafel 6y agoThey are claiming damages, probably the bounty is much higher since a typical Android phone costs 200€ vs Apple's 1200€. Plus a lot of consumer protection legislation and precedents signal that high end products have to last longer.
- foxyv 6y agoMy bet would be that it's because the people who are in powerful positions own iPhones. You are a lot more likely to go after someone you have negative experiences with. When your original $800 iPad gets soft bricked by the appstore and your $3000 touch bar Macbook starts falling apart you aren't going to sue Samsung too, just because they have similar issues. Then again it may just be because they are Apple, the company with enough cash to start-up a small country.
