Anyone ever get this to run on i386?
From the outside without the right hardware it looks so daunting. And I don’t think the source to most of the bootstrap utils seem to be long gone.
I’m always amazed how much mind share Mach had and how it’s largely been destroyed and lost. I suspect on modern machines it’d run just fine...
- lizknope 6y agoMacOS X is based on NeXTSTEP which is based on Mach. Buy a brand new Mac and you get Mach. It ran fine on PowerPC, x86, and now ARM
- p_l 6y agoMach's IPC model actually got worse on newer machines, as the amount of cycles wasted in some badly thought-out decisions was growing greater. Fortunately other resources make it less visible, so certain things were mitigated (that's how OSF/1 offshoots like Digital Unix and OSX didn't die under its weight), but you could always get a benchmark showing its problems. What Mach really did was strangle the microkernel revolution in the crib by becoming the face of it then turning out to be hilariously slow and giving that reputation to microkernels in general.
