I am glad that they passed this law in France. People from the cities are coming to the countryside, thinking they own it and they can remove any nuisance which does not fit they idealized view of the countryside.
They are dead wrong, life in rural area is all about having good relationship with your neighbors because people help each other there. I remember when a storm hit the region, everyone got out, cleared the trees on the road and repaired each other houses.
I grew up in a village in France: the neighbor has a rooster and the house is next to a church. When I took my wife, a city dweller, to the village, she told me she couldn't sleep past 6am due to the noises from the church (bells ring at 6, then every hour) and the rooster.
I am so used to it that my brain filters any rooster or church bells sound.
- Wistar 6y agoMany a small airport in the U.S. has met its fate by the complaints of newcomers.
- leppr 6y agoThat's all fine and I agree with your comment, but in the legal case that's the subject of the article, the rooster owners were the new neighbors, and the area looks fairly urban.
- Glawen 6y agonot at all, the rooster's owner, Corinne Fesseau, lives there since 35 years. The plaintiffs bought the house in 2003, and come there only during summer. source: https://www.ladepeche.fr/2019/05/13/ile-doleron-parce-quil-gene-des-touristes-le-coq-maurice-aura-un-proces-pour-nuisances-sonores,8197369.php https://www.ladepeche.fr/2019/05/13/ile-doleron-parce-quil-g...
- leppr 6y agoGuess the article was wrong then.
- youeseh 6y agoDo you think this law will succeed in making people who are moving to the countryside from the cities to befriend their neighbors?
- narag 6y agoThey are dead wrong, life in rural area is all about having good relationship with your neighbors because people help each other there. Maybe that's the case where you live. I've seen other places where everybody was at war with everybody else. Did you just say "idealized view of the countryside"? Not so extreme, but I grew up bordering the country and it was very annoying sometimes. Dogs barking all night long, very difficult to filter that. Lots of flies, wasps and other bugs. And then little village big hell. Give me big city any time.
- Glawen 6y agoThere is always some issues among people and some nasty stuff can happen, but overall there is more mutual help than in the city. What I miss in the city is this kind of help easy to get by in a village, for example I cannot ask a farmer to remove a tree sump, I have to pay a professional to do it.
- whythre 6y agoI am curious about the phrase ‘little village, big hell.’ What does it mean, exactly?
- narag 6y agoEverybody knows about the life of everybody else. Everybody is ready to criticize you and mess in your business. Everybody believes they know you and you cannot change so you won't change. You are stuck with the same job and, often toxic, relations. Edit: for an extreme case, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabin_fever https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabin_fever
- david422 6y agoI moved next to an airport. Every morning at 6AM I'd get woken up by jet engines at full power taking off. One day I realized that I was no longer waking up at 6AM. Either none of the 6AM flights were running anymore or I just no longer heard the noise. And of course, the flights were still running.
- Bayart 6y ago>People from the cities are coming to the countryside, thinking they own it and they can remove any nuisance which does not fit they idealized view of the countryside. Back when I was living in the South, I remember meeting a few people irritated by the cicadas who were allegedly « too loud ». Imagine that. >I remember when a storm hit the region, everyone got out, cleared the trees on the road and repaired each other houses. Was that the 99 storm ? Back then I was in the North-East, where it was the strongest. I saw an old guy walking his dog outside and almost getting beheaded by a rogue steel sheet. I also vividly remember people daisy-chaining 100m extension chords across the village to bring electricity to the side that lost it. A lot of people were panicking because they had four freezers full of meat hidden in the basement, and a lot of them were quite poor and couldn't afford to lose those.
- Glawen 6y agoYes it was the 99 storm. Our village Lost electricity, tree fell on the only road to the village, and several houses including ours lost tiles. Everyone got busy to repair everything and cleared the road.

To be fair, I grew up into one of the most rural part of France as did my parents and my grand parents before them and I have a vivid memory of my father killing the neighbor rooster while he was crowning at three in the morning. Roosters are dumb animals. Keeping them in settled area is asking for troubles.
