Automate everything else but the approvals. Releases should still be built, tested, and pushed completely automatically, except that one of the release process steps is to present an "Approve" button to the release manager. After the release manager clicks the button, the rest of the release proceeds automatically.
Generally you would only need the manual approvals for prod. Dev, qa, staging, etc., can typically still be released completely automatically, so you just create a CI/CD infrastructure that can be used for both.
- xorcist 6y agoThe whole point of continuous deployments is that they are continuous. This is in contrast to processes that require approvals.
- telotortium 6y agoYes, but if you have regulatory requirements for a manual approval (as the parent comment of mine did), then that's the best you can do - everything is continuous except for the approval.
- xorcist 6y agoIf you are not allowed to deploy continuously then don't do continuous deployments. The tendency to bend words until they lose their meaning just to tick them off is a bit strange. No one can possibly use every trendy idea simultaneously. No trend is a great fit for every situation.
