Signal forcing you to give your phone number to anyone you want to contact is a much bigger security problem to me, especially when in my country it's both somewhat hard to acquire an anonymous sim card and a relatively small sum of money can get you a lot of private information from just having someone's phone number.
- episode0x01 6y agoLuckily they are working on transitioning away from requiring a number. That will be an improvement.
- als0 6y agoI haven't heard anything about that. Do you have a link or reference?
- MzHN 6y agoThis is the only mention I've found, although I suspect there may be more but I haven't been able to find mentions: https://teddit.net/r/technology/comments/kt91qk/signal_private_messenger_team_here_we_support_an/gikqpde/#c https://teddit.net/r/technology/comments/kt91qk/signal_priva... I wish they'd be more open about this, since it's one of the biggest hurdles with Signal.
- Arnt 6y agoDo you happen to know anything about what they'll do about spam? fAt present, a spammer needs your phone number and a source phone number in order to spam you. A suitable source phone number isn't difficult to get, but presumably spammers' numbers will be blacklisted by Signal as soon as someone complains about the spam. If they drop the need for a source phone number, what will replace that threshold? Do you know?
- ahsima1 6y agoThey could at least still require a phone number to register, but allow to hide it and set a username for contacting people.
