The real story here I think is how LACNIC handled this.
Who in their right mind will do infrastructural internet business in Latin America going forward if some self-righteous American man can cause them to revoke IP:s assigned to your company?
There is no indication that this Russian internet provider - who claim they are operating in Belize - had a say in the revocation of this IP space.
Looking at the website of DDoS-Guard, it looks to me like a fairly normal internet provider with fairly normal customers.
I hope they buy IP space in other regions going forward, that have due process without causing disruption for their business and their customers.
- ericwood 6y agoIt seems pretty cut and dry; DDoS-Guard would need a physical presence there to operate, they didn't, so the IPs were revoked. The phone call was simply a tip to investigate.
- richardARPANET 6y agoNot quite. > DDoS-Guard CEO Evgeniy Marchenko maintains the company has done nothing wrong, and that DDoS-Guard does indeed have a presence in Belize. So they acted without any investigation because "uh oh, here comes the mob".
- ericwood 6y agoWhere's that quote from? The article points out they make no mention of any Belize presence, and LACNIC spent several months investigating the tip, which happened in November. That hardly seems reactionary.
- permo-w 6y agosorry to be an ant-fucker, but reactionary basically means conservative
- imwillofficial 6y agoDifferent usage of reactionary.
- permo-w 6y agothere is no different usage. Look it up

- wtallis 6y agoThe rest of the sentence that you improperly quoted: > DDoS-Guard CEO Evgeniy Marchenko maintains the company has done nothing wrong, and that DDoS-Guard does indeed have a presence in Belize. Which clearly does not support anything else in your comment, or rebut anything in the comment you're replying to.

- devrand 6y agoYou're quoting a paraphrase of a statement from the CEO of the company about to get the majority of their IPV4 space revoked. Of course they're going to maintain that they're in the right. Where did you find that LACNIC didn't investigate this?
- astrea 6y agoExactly. While I might disagree with his vendetta, if we're honest, all he is doing is exposing fraud.
- cromwellian 6y agoWhy should South American companies do business which overseas firms that lie and simply use them to launder their location instead of open up offices in the country which is what they want in exchange, probably to help with economic development?
- greenshackle2 6y agoHow did LACNIC handle this? There's almost no information in the article except that it took a few months. It seems you're making a judgement based on speculation that there was no due process or investigation just because the article didn't mention it. But how would krebs even have visibility on internal LACNIC processes?
- ABeeSea 6y agoIf you don’t want your IPs revoked, maybe you should follow the local laws and regulations that govern keeping those IPs? Just a thought.
- ryanlol 6y agoIt’s interesting to see the kinds of mental gymnastics these threads attract from folks seeking to defend their favourite nazi site. LACNIC really fucked up by enforcing their rules that require you to actually be doing business in Latin America, how horrible!
- bjeds 6y agoThis is so tiring. I'm a Swedish man. Last time I visited the US was several years ago. I'm not particularly sympathetic towards Donald Trump or Parler. I'm definitely not here to defend nazism. Not sure if it's intended, but if you intend to get sympathy and support for your cause (whatever that is) by calling me a nazi or implying my interest in internet infrastructure has anything to do with supporting nazism, then you are not gonna get very much sympathy from me. So way to go with the polarization.
- richardARPANET 6y agoWhy are you mentioning Nazis? They literally do not exist in 2021 (except in the Media's imagination). Find me one post by a "Nazi" on Parler and I'll wire you $100USD
- gruez 6y agoBefore I take you up on your offer, what qualifies as a nazi to you? Someone who is an official member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party? Someone who simply hates jews/minorities, thinks hitler did nothing wrong, and has a swastika hanging in his bedroom?

- daemoens 6y agoLACNIC did their own investigation and found out they didn't have any physical presence in Belize. > However, none of the company’s employees are listed as based in Belize, and DDoS-Guard makes no mention of the Latin American region in its map of global operations.
- asdfasgasdgasdg 6y agoPresumably any company actually following the rules and having a physical presence in SA would still be happy to do business in SA? If you don't have a physical presence there, you shouldn't trust LACNIC to keep your IP assignments, but that's a feature.
- whoknew1122 6y ago> "Who in their right mind will do infrastructural internet business in Latin America going forward if some self-righteous American man can cause them to revoke IP:s assigned to your company?" But DDoS-Guard wasn't doing business in Latin America. They made what amounts to a shell company in Belize so they can get a bunch of IP addresses from LACNIC. To the extent LACNIC handled this situation poorly, their poor handling began when they gave DDoS-Guard IPs in the first place. This is how things went: 1.) LACNIC erroneously gave IP space to DDoS-Guard, a Russian company 2.) Someone did LACNIC's research for them and said 'Hey, you know that company isn't really based in Belize.' 3.) LACNIC did their own investigation, concurred, and revoked the IP space. The real story is how LACNIC apparently does little-to-no due dilligence before handing out IP space. And then it took an American man to do cursory research for LACNIC to actually figure out that LACNIC was being lied to by a duplicitous Russian company trying to get cheap IP space in violation of LACNIC policy.
- aww_dang 6y agoRussia and all things Russian appear to have become something of a scare word. There's a palatable innuendo here. Cyber security alarmists and internet do-gooders wouldn't use the same tone to note that a firm is located in Connecticut or Michigan.
