"Common sense" isn't really a helpful frame here, though it's an interesting story. The way I'd frame the story is: if you can do human-centered design at a professional level (a skill you can teach but that most people don't have) _and_ you can solve the problems leading to institutional inertia, the actual changes to make your product a lot better are going to feel startlingly simple.
