China's schoolkids beat American students in all academic categories
- tracyhenry 6y agoWhen GRE math is as easy as middle school math in China, is this really a surprise?
- ninefathomdeep 6y agoThis is not good news for the U.S.A. no matter how it's read, but apparently there is a statistical caveat with China, specifically. It seems that most 15-year-olds in China have already had to pass at least one major exam to remain in school, and those who didn't make the cut were diverted out into vocational training. That distinction might explain the very existence of Level 4 in the data, particularly if Singapore does something similar. Americans should probably be more concerned about the substantial additional financial resources they have poured into their education system in the last couple of decades, with apparently very little impact whatsoever.
- wahern 6y agoIndeed, some countries, including China, abuse the sampling mechanism. Among all OECD countries the U.S. scores slightly above average in all three categories (even accounting for score inflation), though math and science scores could arguably use some improvement: See https://www.oecd.org/pisa/PISA-results_ENGLISH.png https://www.oecd.org/pisa/PISA-results_ENGLISH.png
