YouTube tests new feature that lets fans donate to creators
- mkaic 6y ago"YouTube takes 30 percent of donations made through SuperChat, and the company confirmed to The Verge that the same revenue split will occur with creators who enable clapping." This makes me think that the feature might struggle to gain traction. Why would I donate to a creator through YouTube if they only receive 70% of my money? It seems like YT is betting that the convenience of their donation function is going to be worth enough that I won't just donate to my favorite creators through a less heavily taxed platform.
- trinovantes 6y agoThis feature seems to be heavily used in the Japanese vtuber subculture [1][2]. Some of those streamers also use streamlabs (which don't have fees beyond payment processing) but based on the tracked superchat amounts I think it's safe to say the convenience factor is worth it. The other streaming platform where vtuber subculture is quite popular is China's Bilibili which charges 50% for superchats. I think Twitch biggest mistake is launching without any notable donation fee, especially back when there's practically 0 competition.
