Why does every article about this talks about the energy per transaction? Energy spent is completely independent from the number of transactions.

- ajkdhcb2 6y agoExactly. This is the key point. All fear-mongering about cryptomining energy usage is based on this completely invalid logic.
- dgellow 6y agoAs a way to make it somehow relatable to readers
- spiorf 6y agoBut it's wrong. It's like making car efficiency relatable by saying that a car can go 180km/h using 5 airbags.
- twiss 6y agoTransactions are what makes Bitcoin useful (in theory) for "normal people". Thus it is fair to evaluate the entire Bitcoin network in terms of how much energy it takes versus (i.e. divided by) how many transactions it handles.
- spiorf 6y agoIt's still wrong a wrong comparison. Bitcoin network's energy is expended for securing the block. It means that to revert a 1 hour-old transaction, an attacker would have to consume double the energy the whole bitcoin network expended in that hour. More energy expended == more security. Number of TX is totally irrelevant.
- wmf 6y agoOn second thought, never mind.
