You are not alone! And I am very, very pissed off at the neglect of Google Classroom's UI. I wish they had (and would still) stay out of education, it's so irresponsible to half-ass it like they have. Google Classroom's UI problems have got to be negatively impacting kids' schooling. It's unethical.
