Apple begins blocking M1 Mac users from side loading iOS applications
- Hamuko 6y agoI wish someone was to find a workaround for this, but I imagine that even if one was found, it wouldn't survive beyond one macOS update.
- protoman3000 6y agoI already see people complaining over this that their machines would not be owned by them anymore and that enough is enough. In some cases they are right in that we should demand openness of closed devices such as e.g. iPhones. But in this case the app developers are to blame as they opted out.
- ulfw 6y agoOf course the majority of App developers would opt-out. This idea that they can opt-out was BS to begin with. Mac (especially M1 Macs) are a tiny tiny percentage of iPhone/iPad users. There's got to be UI bugs here and there. No ROI calculation can make "oh let's put support efforts into Mac for the five users we might get there" positive.
- eksu 6y agoThis is a bummer, the whole reason I bought my M1 Mac Mini was so I could side load apps like Discord and use native versions instead of running electron. I think I’m past my return window but might see if I can return mine or not.
- toper-centage 6y agoIs this not grounds for asking for a refund?
- Mindwipe 6y agoThe wording on all copy relating to the new MacBooks was pretty clear it was not all iOS apps.
- Helloworldboy 6y agoInstall gentoo
- ulfw 6y agoAnd thus my M1 Macbook Air lost half it's value. Apple overpromised and underdelivered. Loading and running iPad apps was one of the big sales pitches for going ARM. Reality: nothing of value you'd actually want to use is available in the Mac Appstore. So you HAVE to sideload apps from your iPad. 90% of iPad Apps I use on my Mac are sideloaded. They won't get any updates anymore thanks to this.
- subsection1h 6y agoCan iOS apps be sideloaded by disabling Gatekeeper? https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/sideloading-ios-apps-no-longer-possible-on-m1-macs.2280461/page-7?post=29510997#post-29510997 https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/sideloading-ios-apps-no...
- Mindwipe 6y agoNo. Think of this more as Apple improving the DRM on iOS apps so they do not run where they're not licensed than a change to the OS.
