Akiyoshi's Illusion Pages
- nr2x 6y agoI can’t believe he’s still updating this, thanks so much for the link. Been years since I saw this. The guy is straight-up hacking your visual processing system!
- nneonneo 6y agoI would also recommend following Akiyoshi on Twitter (https://twitter.com/AkiyoshiKitaoka https://twitter.com/AkiyoshiKitaoka) so you can have a daily dose of visual hackery on your Twitter feed :)
- yboris 6y agoIt's got amazing stuff! https://twitter.com/AkiyoshiKitaoka/status/1350001714443608065 https://twitter.com/AkiyoshiKitaoka/status/13500017144436080...
- systemvoltage 6y agoLove the classic professorial web design.
- miahi 6y agoI remember stumbling on this page in 2003-2004. When I saw the title here I thought 'I hope it's the same' - and it is! It looks exactly like it was back then[1]. Love it! - ku-man 6y agoI am sure I am not the only one but some of the illusions do not work for me, and some only work after reading the description. Does your brain needs to be trained to 'get' the illusion?
- flyinghamster 6y agoI've noticed that as well - but others just about leap off the page for me. Also, some only seem to work at certain distances, or if I am moving, or if I'm scrolling the page.
- toyg 6y agoVision is deeply entangled with pattern recognition, so it makes sense: feeding data into your brain about what it's expected to detect will help with detecting it. It's counterintuitive, but in the end vision is not really the low-level signal we think it is, but rather a pretty high-level conceptualization.
- skc 6y agoWhat's curious for me is that I've visited these illusions before in the past and over time I've noticed that I've gradually stopped experiencing a growing number of them.

- kristopolous 6y agoI like the hit counter with 129 million at the bottom
- kirchhoff 6y agoAnother site in a similar vein, which is worth a mention. https://michaelbach.de/ot/ https://michaelbach.de/ot/
- TonyTrapp 6y agoSeen many of those countless times on the internet without credits. Great to see the original source, thanks for sharing!
- Aardwolf 6y agohttp://www.psy.ritsumei.ac.jp/~akitaoka/saishin63e.html http://www.psy.ritsumei.ac.jp/~akitaoka/saishin63e.html "Illusory yellow is observed around hearts." Had to zoom to be convinced that there really are indeed no #ffff00 pixels in there This would be an interesting way to create the illusion of fifth color in 4-color CGA
- yutopia 6y agoThis is super interesting: http://en.ritsumei.ac.jp/news/detail/?id=278 http://en.ritsumei.ac.jp/news/detail/?id=278 https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2018.00345/full https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2018.0034... Apparently he showed his "rotating snake" image to a neural network trained to predict upcoming video frames, it also "saw" the illusory motions.
- xenocratus 6y agoI find it funny and cute seeing animals react to these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcXXQ6GCUb8&ab_channel=rasmusab https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcXXQ6GCUb8&ab_channel=rasmu... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4IHB3qK1KU&ab_channel=SquirrelMaster https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4IHB3qK1KU&ab_channel=Squir...
- jonhohle 6y agoWhen seeing lists of optical illusions, I never see anything regarding Edward Land's work regarding the perception of color in red/white images[0]. With readily available HDR displays this may no longer be relevant, but still interesting. 0 - https://web.archive.org/web/20080914012938/http://land.t-a-y-l-o-r.com/ https://web.archive.org/web/20080914012938/http://land.t-a-y...
