The promised 25,000 mini LEDs turned out to be less than 1000 zones, and even then the controller was horribly laggy and poorly implemented giving a far worse experience than a properly implemented ~40 zone tv. And it costs more.
Micro led would be interesting where every pixel is it's own led, without pixel burnin like oleds suffer from, but that seems far off if ever practical.
Oled seems like it will remain king for a while.
- culopatin 6y agoSo would you say that the rumors about a 2021 MacBook having a mini led display likely to be fake? Or those are different technologies?
- TheAdamist 6y agoMacbooks aren't tvs. This article was about tvs. Additionally, Apple can devote ten billion dollars to developing a controller that's reasonable, tv manufacturers can't. Local dimming regions are inferior to per pixel brightness control anyway. I wish apple well but anything they do is completely irrelevant outside of their closed ecosystem.
- geden 6y agoWhat Apple does with the iPhone 'closed ecosystem' seems very relevant for owners of Samsung handsets... Decisions made in their 'closed'ecosystems leak in the rest of the world.
- noahtallen 6y agoI have the TCL R635, one of the first “cheap” mini LED TVs. I think the picture and local dimming zones are subjectively amazing for the price. I know OLED is way better for $1k more, but I love the picture on the TV. I honestly don’t feel I’m missing out that much. The dimming zones are far superior to the local dimming on Vizio TVs at the same price, which are laggy and quite prone to bloom.
