- rayiner 6y agoEven Silicon Valley in 2020.
- tptacek 6y agoIs, what? Obsessed with credentials? It really isn't (but I can't tell if I'm just misreading you and don't want to belabor it).
- rayiner 6y agoI meant Silicon Valley 2020 is more focused on credentials than it was when Pat Gelsinger was starting out.
- tptacek 6y agoMaybe? I don't know what it was like when Gelsinger started. But it's the least credential-driven high-status professional market in the country, and maybe the world. It's hard to start your career with a first job at Google without a top 10 CS degree, but that might be the only example; it can be your second job without one.
- person_of_color 6y agoIt's possible to get into FAANG without a degree. There's a cottage industry dedicated to it. Not so much with consultants, lawyers, doctors and other fields of engineering.
- tptacek 6y agoHowever hard it might be to get an entry level position at a FAANG without a degree, I don't believe any significant obstacle exists at all at the next tier of companies down from them.
