YouTube takes down Trump video, bans new uploads for a week
- throwawaysea 6y agoAs I understand it, YouTube initially didn’t have any plans to ban Trump’s channel but they responded to pressure from progressive activists who threatened to organize a boycott (https://www.barrons.com/news/activists-call-for-youtube-to-dump-trump-channel-01610508005 https://www.barrons.com/news/activists-call-for-youtube-to-d...). If tech companies are just going to suppress speech based on threats from fringe activists, I’m not sure how half this country or the rest of the world is supposed to trust Google or others with the world’s information and the immense power they clearly have and now are willing to abuse. I’m also not sure where this ends - both sides of the political divide boycott each other as businesses are forced to pick sides, until we are effectively two countries that don’t share culture, politics, or an economy? And then what - one side rules without compromise while the other is subject to a tyranny of the majority? Isn’t this just the road to civil war as one side feels more and more like they have no voice or power?
