Intel at CES: Alder Lake looks a lot like M1
- Someone 6y agoSo, what is this: parallel evolution, where Intel drew more or less the same conclusions as Apple w.r.t. how to build a performant system, or an order from above “Make a presentation that makes people think we’ll have something to compete with M1. We’ll figure out later how to actually do it”? How far along to being shipped is this design?
- jcranmer 6y agoI've heard discussion about big/little core designs several years ago, and it's not totally unheard of even before M1 comes out--the Nintendo DS has a big and a little ARM core in it. That said, a lot of the discussion I've heard about big/little core has tended to be on the order of "the computer architects love pitching the idea; the customers hate it."
- Someone 6y agoI know that, but M1 is much more than big/little. Rereading the article, it seems mentioning M1 is clickbait. From what the article says, this is a big/little CPU, nothing more. The article doesn’t mention anything about including all that custom silicon that M1 has in the package, sharing all memory with the GPU, etc.
- moistbar 6y agoIt's already available in Intel Lakefield processors. They definitely took inspiration from ARM's big.LITTLE architecture, but they've been at it since before the M1 was out.
