Gimp with task-based interface customizations
- wccrawford 15y agoA few thoughts: 1) Great for tutorials... If it only had examples to go along with the steps. 2) Horrible for actual usage. The search and selection take up way too much screen real estate, and the step-by-step box is even worse. 3) Since it's not in the official client, you have to rely on them to bring in all the official updates. It would be better if this were somehow a plugin instead.
- dimmuborgir 15y agoAgreed. Making it a plugin will also ensure that the classic toolbox is still available. That way, a novice user can quickly become proficient in GIMP.
- wccrawford 15y agoJudging by the video, I'm pretty sure the classic toolbox was still available... But you still had that search stuff above it.
- dimmuborgir 15y agoYes but as you said earlier, it has taken up way too much screen real estate and it's not at all intuitive. Making it a plugin will retain the classic GIMP intact as well as one doesn't need to install a separate GIMP client.
- mterry 15y agoOur data indicate that most people use only about 6 different commands in a given session. Hence, the toolbox has a linear list of named commands that accommodates about this number of commands. This list also reflects the ordered steps one must take to accomplish a given task. However, you can still switch to the traditional grid view, if you wish. This grid view only contains the commands you need for your task, reducing screen real estate. That said, we'd be interested in hearing people's ideas on how to further improve the workflow efficiency with the new design. Email the project's email address if you'd like to provide feedback. Examples are provided for each tutorial -- each task set has an associated wiki page. We can't do a plug-in at this time because the GIMP plug-in architecture doesn't allow us to deeply customize the toolbox like we have.

- mixu 15y agoHaven't seen the site, but there seems to be a blog: http://adaptablegimp.blogspot.com/ http://adaptablegimp.blogspot.com/ and a Youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qP8c2R8YEb4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qP8c2R8YEb4
- udoprog 15y agoThis is the kind of stuff that Gimp needs instead of playing catch-up with PS.
