PBS NEWS Counsel calls for re-education camps for children of opposition
- techdragon 6y agoLook... this sounds a lot like someone venting their opinions over some drinks. It’s unsettling... but I’ve heard way more unsettling things in normal day to Day life because I walked into a conversation without any context. When he started talking about enlightenment camps it was really hard to imagine he was being serious in any fashion.
- NoOneNew 6y agoYea, but if someone made jokes he deems offensive, what do you imagine his response would be? Should he get a pass because he's part of a blue area, with blue friends and believes in blue ideals. Its thus okay to hate people in red areas, with red ideals? Seriously, if a Republican said the exact same stuff about, let's say those who were for Obama, would you say, "it was really hard to imagine he was being serious in any fashion".
- techdragon 6y agoOh I definitely agree. I was trying to find a way to express my concerns about giving him a pass on saying dumb shit while employed as a senior government official, with out watering down my core concern that anyone might consider this a genuine threat. But that’s it in a nutshell, he doesn’t deserve special treatment due to his political affiliations, he’s making off colour jokes about putting children in camps based on their parentage, which is obviously wrong. But he is also a human being who lives in a country currently beset by turmoil and I can definitely sympathise with blowing off steam... I just don’t want to see the political polarisation spread further into government beyond normally political appointed positions.
- NoOneNew 6y agoThere's a part of me that thinks he's being Schrodinger's Asshole about it. He's serious until there's observed push back, then, "Hey, it was just a joke". But sure, there's a chance he's just talking shit. Venting is different to me, but that's just semantics. But I do agree with you, this polarization shit needs to stop, from both sides. At this point, I think it's now more important than ever to utterly shut down (in debate and rhetoric form) anyone who thinks extreme viewpoint behavior of any flavor is acceptable. If it doesn't end, I think we're just going to see unending ping ponging of more extremism.
