There is one very important fact that is left out of these conversations: social media and similar Internet-driven mass communication platforms are NOT necessary. They do not solve a “problem.” They are merely an amplifier for good and for evil. They are addictive and easily manipulated. Free speech is not equivalent to a social media presence: that is a 21st century construct. We did not need them 30 years ago and we don’t need them now.
