I started using st from suckless and realized that met most of my needs, especially when I learned to use tmux properly. In some ways XTerm is the luxury version compared to st. I don't necessarily recommend st, but it is always interesting to learn that you can get by with a lot less than you thought you could. And it helps you learn some tricks you might not otherwise think you needed.

Honestly, the main reason is that I can configure it to use ligatures, whereas the few that offer ligature support aren't terminals that I prefer, and the terminals I like better don't offer ligature support. So, st it is. Otherwise, it's not the best with regard to overall capabilities (though that is because of my limited ability to write my own original patches for it, I suppose), but it's not the worst either. I don't especially recommend it either, but I like it a lot for my own use. People who don't know how to patch C on Linux are probably not really going to want to use it with the default config.
