The current administration:
- rescinded net neutrality, which helped FAANG companies.
- threatened to break up Big Tech.
- has anti-China policies, which reduces Big Tech's customer base.
The new administration may be reversing all of the above.
- offby37years 6y agoAnd worryingly, former Democratic Party staffers fill FAANG ranks, e.g. Andy Stone who is now Facebook’s policy communications manager: https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2020-10-18/facebook-twitter-google-can-t-be-good-censors-of-politics https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2020-10-18/facebo...
- drak0n1c 6y agoBig Tech was already largely banned from market entry in China before the current administration.
- mschuster91 6y ago> has anti-China policies, which reduces Big Tech's customer base. Biden has already said he will not reverse the China policy - quite the contrary, unlike Trump who only resorted to bullying tactics (aka trade/tariff war), Biden intends to work out a China policy with allied countries (i.e. NATO / European Union) that will aim at changing the abusive practices China is doing, per https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/02/opinion/biden-interview-mcconnell-china-iran.html https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/02/opinion/biden-interview-m... .
- razius 6y agoWhat he says and does are two different things.
- yed 6y agoNet neutrality prevents ISPs from performing exactly this kind of censorship.
- aksss 6y agoIt’s not ISPs doing the censoring.
- unityByFreedom 6y agoSure it is you just aren't aware of it. Zero rating is a form of content control where you end up paying more for off-network content.
- fat_pikachu 6y agoLots of countries with NN regulations allow zero rating e.g. look at the EU.
- unityByFreedom 6y agoThat's not a good thing
- fat_pikachu 6y agoThat's somewhat up for debate.
- unityByFreedom 6y agoEverything's up for debate provided you make a case for it.
- fat_pikachu 6y agoLet's rephrase it then. The topic of zero rating is a studied one where people have found advantages and disadvantages, which is why carve-outs were made for it in the first place.

- unityByFreedom 6y agoReinstating net neutrality will be a good thing. Shelving that mostly helped ISPs, who've now expanded their anti-competitive zero-rating practices to broadband.
- inglor_cz 6y agoWhat prevents Big Tech from occupying the Chinese market is the fact that the Chinese leadership does not trust them to toe the line perfectly. That won't change with a change in the White House.
