You know, stories don't just get to the front page on their own. If people stop upvoting them, they won't make it to the front page.

- bitcharmer 6y agoIsn't it enough that all other social media are vividly discussing it? I'm from Europe and slowly getting tired of this. It is not what I come to HN for. Not everyone lives and breathes America.
- pmiller2 6y agoThere's a link under every headline that says "hide". Use it, and you won't see these stories anymore.
- bitcharmer 6y agoI'm aware of this, but I don't want to have to hide half of HN's front page. It wasn't the case until recently.
- pmiller2 6y agoThen, you should be using the link that says "flag" instead.
- baby 6y agoShould we become r/adviceanimal then?
- pmiller2 6y agoIf that's what you want to see here, then, sure.
- Quarrelsome 6y agoWe shouldn't be like that. Tailoring for the crowd just becomes a game of "who can invite more of their friends". The tone of this place _should_ be curated. We're tech, we're educated, we're start ups. If we lose that, we lose our soul.
- pmiller2 6y agoSorry, but, you've got it all wrong. "We" are whoever shows up.
- Quarrelsome 6y agoYes and no. We should have standards.
- pmiller2 6y agoOkay, so, "we" are educated, tech/startup people. How do you want to enforce these standards? Sign up with a work email and submit a LinkedIn profile? That's just Blind with an extra step, and I think we all know the quality of discussion that happens there.
- Quarrelsome 6y agogenerational shift is always going to change the culture but we should attempt to prevent Hacker News from sliding into the general patterns of other social media. We should talk about tech, we should talk about business, we should care about curiosity and shoot the shit without taking things personally.
- baby 6y agoWhy me? I think the moderators and YC should choose what they want to see here.
