yeah - it is a bit 'cutesy'... It does seem a bit 'simpler' and 'cleaner' then some of the other systems (li-ion, molten salt, etc). But if the environment allows it, I'd think a pumped water system would be more flexible. Obviously though, not all environments have the space, or the water for that.
