Ask HN: Idea of “Riskipedia”, or “Wikichance”
The main idea is a wiki-like website where one could find out information about common risks and probabilities, for personal risk management and decision making.
For example, what's the chance of dying of COVID, given all personal circumstances? Or, how much health risks would be decreased when quitting drinking / smoking, etc...
Or, what's more dangerous -- flying or driving?
Or, what's more profitable on average -- lottery or startups?
There is a trove of such information online, bu it's scattered and badly organised, and every time I try to check to find a better and safer options, it's too hard.
Would such wiki / service be viable?
- mimixco 6y agoI run a hosted wiki service[0]. You could certainly try it out for a couple weeks and see if you get any traction. [0] http://miki.mimix.io http://miki.mimix.io
- coolvision 6y agoone issue is that it would also need some additional UI to allow to explore risks conditional on personal circumstances. like, it's not that interesting to know the risk of dying in an earthquake, on average, but need to condition it on user's location. Could something like this be added to your service?
- mimixco 6y agoSure it's just HTML/JS. Anything that runs on the web could be added to it.
- coolvision 6y agothanks, will try. does it have good support for moderation and administration (like mediawiki), as I would want to open it to random public...
- mimixco 6y agoYes, it's built on Wiki.js and great controls for public or private pages, groups, editors, etc. Looking forward to your thoughts!
- blindm 6y agoRunning a magazine-style blog would be better than a wiki IMHO. Wikis are often drab and dry and often seen as academic which is off-putting for people. A blog is more exciting!
- coolvision 6y agoyes, but with wiki it would be filled by people, with better synergy of what people are actually interested about. This reminds me of the charts of real risks (heart decease, etc..), vs most searched for (terrorism etc...)
- mimixco 6y agoThe advantage of a wiki is the ease of finding information. Blogs don't have navigation down the side that leads people to topics and they dont have section pages with links.
- coolvision 6y agoI would envision some curated structure of categories for various risks, but within the categories it would be nice if it's self-organizing
- mimixco 6y agoThe navigation comes out better if you make it manually. I've put some training videos on the site about how to get the most out of it.
