I am gonna be fired soon, techlead does not wants me to do things
I am sure i am going to be fired soon. Teamlead does not wants to give me any tasks to do, probably woried i will break things.
I spend few first months mostly writing tests, but coverage plan got achieved so there is no need to do that, at least in my opinion,
as >50% coverage is causing code to be more difficult to mantain, its like you get "concreted" under flaky automated tests, that fails after
every little change. So i tried to change strategy and "refactor" - means rewriting old very long methods in bunch of several shorter
methods, changing long method signatures into parameter objects etc. Techlead is talking constantly about rewriting monolith into
microservices, so i can try to do that, and i also try to learn docker, so deployment will be easier for new workers. Anyway its all
on my own accord, techlead does not want to talk with me, and does not expect me to do anything, so i dont feel motivated. Every weekend
i say to myself - "i will learn microservices and docker so i will know what i am doing" - but it always ends on procrastinating and
i spend those 2 days just browsing internet minlessly and watching movies. I hate myself and job, i started drinking to cope.
I am not gonna leave myself because i wont get new job any time soon. I spend few years unemployed and i was employed in this company only for
4 months. But i just want to be fired so i have free time to write my bachelor thesis and end my study, i need some soulsearching,
because i dont even know if i still enjoy programming
- gus_massa 6y ago> i also try to learn docker Learning docker may be useful later in this job or in a future job. (Don't try it in production, until you get an official approval.)
- marcelbataille 6y agothere was few hours docker training in company, and green light to implement, but personally i was not tasked with doing it. They implemented it already in another project but i dont have access to its code. Its old multimodule java ee application, its kinda difficult to make it work with docker
- aurizon 6y agoSuggest you learn what you can while paid about docker and micro-s, as gus_massa suggested, so you can fatten your CV in case you are fired. Your inability to focus and apply yourself may have been noted and it may have overflowed into your current projects. When people like that are noted it can often lead to firing, or you may be placed under closer supervision to better channel the true abilities they may also see in you. The inability to discipline yourself to a task in an OCR manner should be eliminated for your own good.
- marcelbataille 6y agowhat is OCR manner?
- JPLeRouzic 6y agoPerhaps Obsessive Compulsive as in OCD (just a guess)
- aurizon 6y agoYes, typo. Should be OCD, as in people who work determinedly towards a goal in an obsessive manner. I could not change it when I saw it as the edit window had closed.
- marcelbataille 6y agoso problem is i just dont have clear defined goal i guess
- aurizon 6y agoSome people are generals, and others are soldiers. Soldiers have direct contact with the enemy(code), but generals were once soldiers and have risen to deal with the complexity of huge structures of code, that is to marshal diverse resources to deal with the overall plan. At the top are the 5 star people who run the code warriors of Oracle and Microsoft et al. Linux has a lot of soldiers, some 1-2 stars and it looks like a single 5 star. This is why Linux has not won the war, but has won many small battles. I had hopes that Canonical would empower Linux to win the war.
