Mozilla, with their $50M annual budget, can't pay the fees.
Okay.
- bastawhiz 6y agoThey say in the post that it would cost almost $10M/year to license H.264, and that HEVC would cost ten times that. Do you expect them to put 20-200% of their budget into a single video codec?
- erichocean 6y agoI expect them to negotiate on rates like an adult. Mozilla is taking an activist role, and (to me at least) have been flaunting their incompetence for at least a decade on this topic.
- kmeisthax 6y agoThe whole point of these patent pools is that they charge a uniform fee schedule to all users of a particular technology. There isn't much room for Mozilla to negotiate. MPEG-LA demands their pound of flesh.

- mastax 6y agoFirefox has ~220M monthly active users [0], which would easily hit the current maximum royalty cap of $6.5M per year, so more than 10% of their yearly budget going to a single ancient codec.
