It would also cost however much a lawyer charges for helping to moderate every submission. Because I doubt the average WordPress blogger is familiar with all possible laws the submissions could violate. Or can make correct judgements based on precedent for things like copyright works.
Honestly though, the blogger would probably only need to pay for one hour of a lawyer's time. That lawyer would say "Turning off the comments is your best bet" and then round up to an hour for billing.
- Mediterraneo10 6y agoSetting up your own Wordpress blog can be done with a domain name and server hosting outside the United States, and with some effort this can be done anonymously. In that case, you don't need to worry about Section 230, you only have to worry about the (possibly laxer, possibly stricter) local laws. The reason that big social media sites are vulnerable to this particular US law is because they are businesses that chose to incorporate in the USA.
- danShumway 6y agoShould it bother us that the solution to a free speech problem in the US under your proposed legislative change can be rephrased as, "hide from the government and piggy-back on another country's better speech laws?" This strikes me as a solution to the problem of censorship in the same way that "just buy your medical supplies from Mexico" is a solution to US healthcare costs.
- triceratops 6y agoCan't the US require performing DNS blocking of sites that violate American law? Can't they sanction entities that do business with your American law-breaking website?
- heavyset_go 6y agoRepealing 230 would affect the site's host and registrar because the host would be found liable for illegal content on their servers. That means that you aren't going to pay $100 for a WordPress site, because allowing you to upload content without the protection of Section 230 is too much of a risk to bear for only $100.
