Agreed, I've lost count of the number of apps that have tried this over the years, probably all let down by not getting the social aspect right: lack of community/friending/critical mass. The idea always seemed to make sense, just waiting for the right time and the right implementation. The friending/link sharing angle could be the twist that makes it work.
