Yeti Foods is a Facebook-Free business
- open-paren 6y agoThe Yeti Cheese company, a small, plant-based cheese company, not the well-known Yeti Coolers company
- shafyy 6y agoSorry for the possible confusion, I updated the title to clarify this.
- TedDoesntTalk 6y agoThat’s hysterical. Thanks for pointing it out!
- andreygrehov 6y agoAs a quick promo – great idea (never heard of Yeti Cheese before, would love to try). Long-term effect is questionable and could very well be net negative for the business. As for Facebook, given their size, such move is the same as to pee in the ocean ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- TedDoesntTalk 6y ago> could very well be net negative Have you read the recent HN links to articles about Facebook advertising fraud?
- andreygrehov 6y agoYes, I've read about it, but it doesn't mean that going against Facebook will benefit your business. As an ethical move, I get it. From the business perspective, it's questionable.
- rospaya 6y agoThey might need a few more tweaks https://ibb.co/0YNWNxh https://ibb.co/0YNWNxh
- the-tomster 6y agoThey have a "share to facebook" button at the bottom of the post...
- asiando 6y agoI don’t see it. Edit: Hah, my content blocker hid them.
- shafyy 6y agoThanks for pointing out, it was from the Ghost theme. I just removed it.
- beerandt 6y agoYeah, people need to realize that it's not using FB that really empowers it, but allowing FB to use you. If you're not blocking all FB owned domains, IPs, embeds, cookies, and ads (placed via it's network), then you're still getting used. This goes for both client-side and server-side "users."
- duxup 6y agoI appreciate their efforts and I share their POV. On a more meta note: I want to avoid going off meta too far here but .. does this company doing this thing, matter? Or is this article moving up the HN list of articles just based on a general sentiment about Facebook and ... not really anything about the company or what exactly they're saying? I don't want to take anything away from this company's efforts but I feel like on HN I'm seeing a lot more articles up-voted based on title / sentiment, but not content. Granted I don't know the voter's minds, but it feels like that is the case. I wonder how many people know this is some cheese company and not the larger fancy cooler company.
- whycombagator 6y agoIn case anyone is curious what Yeti cheese is (like I was) > Ingredients Soybeans (63%), Sunflower oil, water, salt, coagulant: Glucono-delta-lactone, starter cultures. May contain traces of all allergens.
- jen20 6y agoI definitely appreciate the effort - and the cheese looks delicious (but sadly does not ship to the US!). However, the Ghost template probably needs some updating to remove the "share on Facebook" button.
- shafyy 6y agoThanks for pointing out, just removed it. Edit: And thanks :-)
- TedDoesntTalk 6y agoWhy Facebook only? What about google advertising too?
- shafyy 6y agoWe don't do any paid ads and also don't use any Google products currently, but I think FB is more "evil" right now.
- engineer_22 6y agoNationalize Facebook!
- bzb6 6y agoBit off topic: how is it legal to call their product cheese when it’s not actual cheese?
- wes-k 6y agoSee plant based milk, mayo, egg, meat, butter, etc. Also no one is ever upset about peanut butter which isn't butter! And it depends on your definition. It is cultured like cheese and plays a similar role in cuisine. Also, no plant based product is ever trying to trick or disguise itself. Their entire market is based around people knowing it is plant based. Yeti's homepage has in big bold text right at the top "Real cheese, made from plants"... you could argue "real cheese" and "made from plants" is an oxymoron but my point is, no one buying the product is going to be confused.
- shafyy 6y agoThe law is fuzzy and different from country to country, even within the EU. In general, it needs to be clear to customers when they make the buying decision that it's not dairy-based cheese. So, on the product page and on the product packaging we need to call it "cheese alternative". But those laws are stupid and pushed by the dairy and meat lobbies. To every sane person, it's clear within 1 sec that this is a plant-based cheese without animal milk.
- offtop5 6y agoAny luck getting an American distributor
- shafyy 6y agoI think it will be a while before we start selling in the US to be honest.
