Atari SIO – The direct ancestor to USB
- phendrenad2 6y agoSeems kind of low-level to be the direct ancestor to USB (except maybe as far as strictly serial busses go). I'd think that SCSI is closer to USB. It's a parallel bus, but it has more in the way of configuration ROM stored on the device, a large command set, etc.
- ddingus 6y agoWell, it does have a command set, and is basically device independent. Most recently that device independence was used to basically put Atari 8 bit computers online. One can use old software and the BASIC language to write programs that can interact via the internet. https://fujinet.online/ https://fujinet.online/ And a BASIC programming example: https://youtu.be/OGcoXPkPjs8 https://youtu.be/OGcoXPkPjs8
- ryanmercer 6y agoAnd, for Atari enthusiasts like me, a way to directly interface with our Atari computers via USB via things like: - SIO2PC from ATARIMAX https://www.atarimax.com/sio2pc/documentation/index.html https://www.atarimax.com/sio2pc/documentation/index.html - and Sio2PC USB from Lotharek https://lotharek.pl/productdetail.php?id=108 https://lotharek.pl/productdetail.php?id=108 Actually, a lot of us over at https://atariage.com/forums/ https://atariage.com/forums/ and similar groups use quite a deal of modern hardware for interfacing with our Atari machines via SIO
