- egwynn 6y agoI think probably not: https://www.solipsys.co.uk/new/WithdrawingFromHackerNews.html https://www.solipsys.co.uk/new/WithdrawingFromHackerNews.htm...
- codetrotter 6y agoFrom the page you linked: > I'm not going to stop reading, and I'm probably going to make the occasional contribution. And looking at the history of submissions for the domain of the OP article we find that he is still commenting too. Most recently about 18 minutes ago in fact. So I think there is a good chance that the author will see the comment of the person you responded to :)
- ColinWright 6y agoI was away for a long time, and my usage pattern has changed substantially. But I exist sporadically, with long periods of absence.
- ColinWright 6y agoPing. Thank you.
- chacha2 6y agoYou don't even need to look at the site to know what it looks like when HN says this.
- Shared404 6y agoThanks for the laugh, and yes, I'm guilty as charged. :)
- psychometry 6y agoDisagree. There's nothing I hate more than having to downsize my browser window because some minimalist didn't restrict the characters per line in the body text.
- ColinWright 6y agoReally? Nothing you hate more? Interesting. Personally, I hate it when people put things in a column, deciding that they know best how I should use up my screen real-estate. I like to have control, and I use it without effort. With this design, I can choose. I like that, and I hate it when someone forces their choices on me. I admit, though, that there are things I hate more than that. Out of interest, how would you design a page that caters for both tastes? How would you decide on the number of words that should be in a line? How would you reply to someone who prefers a different answer, but then has no way of changing it?
- psychometry 6y agoAre you familiar with the concept of an idiom?
- SebastianKra 6y ago> Out of interest, how would you design a page that caters for both tastes? I wouldn't! The great thing about design is that Designers can often do research to make the best decision for everyone. This Wikipedia article is a good starting point if you want to read into how line lengths are chosen. [1] You might wonder why Wikipedia itself is then using a unlimited line width. And the answer is: they're changing it [2] [1]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_length https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_length [2]: https://diff.wikimedia.org/2020/09/23/wikipedia-is-getting-a-new-look-for-the-first-time-in-10-years-heres-why/ https://diff.wikimedia.org/2020/09/23/wikipedia-is-getting-a...
