When you say "we're not yet there" what do you think would be the best step forward? Currently you need a server in the middle because your home router isn't opened up to the public internet. Would that be the answer? Opening up your routers to the internet?
- alexchamberlain 6y agoYour router _is_, but your computer is not. Your router NATs your connection. (I believe some ISPs may have another level of address translation on their side too...)
- polishdude20 6y agoYes sorry, you're right. So what's the solution without needing a separate server?
- alexchamberlain 6y agoI don't see one myself; at the very least, you need a signalling server. Under ipv6, there is less NATing involved, but you're still going to have problems with firewalls.
- polishdude20 6y agoThere is port forwarding though right? Although, your public IP can change at any moment if it's not static.
- alexchamberlain 6y agoRight- I believe that's how a STUN server works; opens a UDP port to the outside world. TURN is a TCP connection to a UDP proxy in effect. The signalling server is different; it proxies metadata between peers like "today, my IP is X" or "I'd like to start a call"
