I'm surprised they didn't model it after the sonic screw driver[0] somehow. I think they would have had issues getting that LED grid to fin nicely on it. The design they went with looks rather straight forward and easy to make and assemble as well. Can't imagine aligning all the parts in a thin shaft would make assembly very easy. There might be good reasons, with licensed products you have to take into account who has the license for each part, a large toy company might already have negotiated exclusive rights to making sonic screwdrivers so might not even have been an option. Although it does seems strange to make the selling point so much about that universe but the object itself isn’t even trying to be part of the universe.
