- MaxBarraclough 6y agoI'm surprised there was no mention of the Librarian and the Metaverse, from Snow Crash.
- nitrogen 6y agoI can't remember which of Greg Egan's novels it was (probably one of Diaspora, Schild's Ladder, or Incandescence), but if I remember right there was another interesting portrayal of a digital library as it could be experienced by fully digitized/"simulated" people.
- MaxBarraclough 6y agoSadly I've not read those. I thought the Metaverse and Librarian were interesting takes on the 'web that never was', although I thought the capabilities and limitations of the Librarian seemed a bit inconsistent and arbitrary. It was meant to be a sort of glorified search system with a VR interface, lacking the ability to deeply analyse and reason about subject matter in its database, but it seemed to me that it was essentially a matter of luck whether the Librarian could answer Hiro's various questions.
