Rock Pi X Review – An Atom x5 SBC running Windows 10 or Ubuntu 20.04
- mech422 6y agoA bit cheaper then my ODroid H2's...But much less featureful. It seems expensive for a SBC, but not powerful enough for a 'mini-pc'. So I'm not sure what the market is for this...
- hakfoo 6y agoThe use case I'm surprised we don't see is for refurbishing embedded devices without changing software. Plenty of things like tills and gambling machines were built around things like Pentium IIIs running embedded flavours of WinXP. The software isn't necessarily an issue (if it's not exposed to the outside world) but eventually the hardware is going to die. One of these boards would be an undisputable upgrade-- fast enough for purpose, but also fanless, no spinning-rust disc, and lower electrical consuption. It would require some careful design decisions to provide, say, a video and I/O solutions with WinXP drivers. Imagine one with ISA and PCI slots!
- zamadatix 6y agoAssuming XP would even boot, the CPU launched when extended support for XP Embedded ended. Not sure the boot firmware has CSM or not and even if it did that doesn't mean much of anything on the board itself is guaranteed to work or have a driver. I guess you could always virtualize it, though I'm not sure this would be the best board for that either.
