I wasted lots of time prematurely paying back tech debt only to have that code later deleted or rewritten. It is important to properly prioritize tech debt and pay back things that the business is currently paying high interest on. Once the product matures it makes sense to be more proactive in doing things right, but in the early stages, things are changing too fast that you just need to get out a rough prototype.
