Google seems to have a continuity of feature problem. Why bother creating all this cool technology if we can't rely on it working a year or two down the road?

Google seems to have a continuity of feature problem. Why bother creating all this cool technology if we can't rely on it working a year or two down the road? At least with open source I can pick up and start maintaining a feature that I care about if nobody else wants to. Not sure how to accomplish this with a company that strives to make it impossible to talk to anyone that can make a difference.
