- echelon 6y ago> In 2008, after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the party talked of growing downward economic pressure. > The current pandemic has dealt a far bigger blow to the global economy than Lehman did 12 years ago. Nevertheless, China's leader is staying away from that phrase. > His reticence is, in effect, a message to the Chinese people: Grow confident. Fake it till you make it? There's enormous headwind facing China's international trade. They're going to have to switch over to domestic growth sooner than later. Their rise to world dominance depends on the Chinese domestic flywheel. It'll be interesting to see what Biden's relationship with China will be, and if other countries begin to take an even harder line.
- tomatocracy 6y agoIt's often overlooked that China also have an enormous demographic challenge heading their way very soon as a consequence of the one child policy of the 70s/80s. As such they have a very limited window to build their domestic economy and international influence to mitigate this.
- the-dude 6y agoNo words were deleted : the author is comparing a statement from 2019 to the one from 2020. Disingenious.
- echelon 6y agoThe headline is eye-catching, but they spell it out rather clearly in the first paragraph. Nikkei is a center-right publication on finance from a Japanese perspective. They have interests in a weakened China and celebrate a hard line being taken against the nation. edit: what the hell are these downvotes? This is an entirely neutral tone.
- the-dude 6y agoYou have editted your comment twice : your original comment did not have the current first sentence. And IIRC you have been here long enough to know not to complain about voting.
- echelon 6y agoI often edit comments within the first few minutes to change wording or add clarifying statements. I'd rather do that than create an entirely new post. I got a downvote almost immediately after posting, unedited, and they proceeded to follow until I was -3 or so. It felt entirely neutral, but you're right.
- tomohawk 6y ago> It was not until mid-January that the seriousness of the outbreak began to be discussed. Then, on Jan. 20, the head of a Chinese government's expert team finally declared there was no doubt about "human-to-human transmission." So not true. On Dec 30, Dr Li sent a message warning about human transmission. However, the very next day the local health officials stayed on the party line that there was no human transmission despite all of the evidence. Then on Jan 1, Dr Li and other doctors were arrested and forced to recant their statements. https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2020/the-2019-coronavirus-virus-lands-in-the-u-s-after-killing-17-and-taking-eight-to-prison/ https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2020/the-2019-coronavi... By this time, Taiwan had already closed their borders with China. EDIT: And yes, the CCP continued to deny the science until Jan 20.
- sofixa 6y ago> Then, on Jan. 20, the head of a Chinese government's expert team finally declared there was no doubt about "human-to-human transmission So the statement is true? It wasn't until the 20 of January that Chinese officials officially confirmed there is human to human transmission?
- Udik 6y agoAnd 3 days later, on the 23rd, they put the entire region of Wuhan, 60 million people, under the strictest lockdown seen anywhere. This is 30 days after the very first sample was sent to a laboratory for a suspect case of pneumonia, and 23 days after the authorities worldwide had been informed of a suspected pneumonia epidemics in Wuhan, when the total cases where still below 300. Agreed, the response wasn't quick enough and this is self-evident; but it seems quicker and more decisive than than anything we've seen in the West.
- mgamache 6y agoI think he is referring to official CCP statements not news reports.
- berdario 6y agoThe situation was definitely not clear at the beginning: - there was a cluster of pneumonia cases - there was a detected case of SARS - there was a new coronavirus The fact that the SARS test didn't detect SARS, but actually SARS-CoV-2 wasn't clear at the beginning. Was it the same coronavirus that was detected on the 27th? Was the cluster of pneumonia cases definitely caused by that same virus or was it a coincidence? (Nowadays lots of people like to claim that Covid19 is not killing people, but rather it's the pre-existing conditions. Imagine how much push back you would've got before the pathogen was even properly recognized!) The pneumonia outbreak was conclusively linked to the Coronavirus only on January 7th. 2 days before the first death. If it took a week or two after that for mobilizing the whole region against a previously unknown pathogen, it's not so bad after all. In Europe we struggled to find face masks for MONTHS after that! :/ Also, I don't think that Taiwan ever closed their borders with China: they were simply screening incoming flights from there, and they were still allowing their citizens to come back from China (compare with Europe in December 2020, where italians cannot even go back to see family in the country, even if they are italian citizens :/ (unless they are also residents... Or someone in their family is passing away, or similar serious reasons)
