How different is SBCL from CMU Common Lisp?
SBCL started as a fork of CMU CL, initially to simplify the build process which was a bit complex. That was over 20 years ago and since then, SBCL has been very actively maintained and developed. I am not aware that CMU CL did get as much attention any more.
