Apple's Mac Mini is killing my Hackintosh
- smartbit 6y agoTechnical details why Arm hackintosh will be difficult in Death of x86 and the future of Hackintoshing https://dortania.github.io/hackintosh/updates/2020/11/12/bigsur-new.html#death-of-x86-and-the-future-of-hackintoshing https://dortania.github.io/hackintosh/updates/2020/11/12/big...
- tonyedgecombe 6y ago>Apple will stop it from working. No they won't. It will stop you upgrading to later versions when they eventually abandon Intel support in macOS but even that is a long way off. >It's not something Apple supports, and it may be a violation of the MacOS software licensing terms. I don't think there is much doubt about that.
- 411111111111111 6y agoUh, historically speaking they absolutely will do that soonish. I'm not sure why it matters though. If you wanna use a nonfree os, do so... But the only reason why Apple hardware usually works well together is because they just support a tiny fraction of available components. Now complaining about having hardware which will likely be out of support within the next 2yrs is strange, considering that is kinda apples core premise. But he's also saying that building a PC is the nerdiest thing an apple user could do, so it's kinda telling what kind of person he is. I for one am happy the new Mac mini exist and will likely buy one at some point. It's memory is low, but I already have a beefy workstation if I need to do actual number crunching. Having a secondary system that's quiet and still performant would be nice.
- tonyedgecombe 6y agoIt took four years last time, I'm assuming it will be the same again.
- dataking 6y agotl;dr: hackintoshes may stop working 'cause arm. nothing new behind the clickbaity title.
- bobbygoodlatte 6y agoThis is clickbait. Apple will not discontinue support for Intel Macs "soon". And his computer will likely work, just with an outdated version of the OS, once they eventually drop Intel support — years down the road. Considered he pirated Apple's operating system, they owe him nothing. He certainly knew the risks going into this.
- mrkstu 6y agoThe title is truer than the article. The M1 will kill Hackintoshes- but only because one of the main drivers was the superior price/performance, which doesn't really seem to be an issue going forward- the M1 will provide equal or better price/performance to cobbled together home build's, not just HP/Dell's premium lines.
- chrischen 6y agoSo an unsupported use of the macOS software gets unsupported... surprise?
- ganafagol 6y agoStockholm syndrome? Author expresses how evil it is what Apple is doing, at the same time being totally in love with Apple?
- karolist 6y agoThey won't stop it from working ever, they will stop the updates but given Apple has about 7 year trail and still sells Intel Macs today that might even go into 2030.
- calciphus 6y agoI don't know about that. The transition TO Intel was pretty abrupt, with machines bought 18 months earlier not able to get the new OS, which was tied to things like iTunes and iLife file versions. So a degraded experience of ownership happens very quickly.
