Reddit mods please stop automated blocking
- michaelmrose 6y agoA community is a product and a process. A community might stand in to judge the relative merits of mostly at least somewhat meritorious content to help the cream rise to the top but they aren't going to want to hang out and be a human spam filter. >…the First Law of Kipple (is that) ‘Kipple drives out nonkipple’… (one) can roll the kipple-factor back… No one can win against kipple, except temporarily and maybe in one spot, like in my apartment I’ve sort of created a stasis between the pressure of kipple and nonkipple, for the time being. But eventually I’ll die or go away, and then the kipple will take over. It’s a universal principal operating throughout the universe; the entire universe is moving towards a final state of total, absolute kippleization. https://www.zinzin.com/observations/2012/kipple-drives-out-nonkipple/ https://www.zinzin.com/observations/2012/kipple-drives-out-n... Automation is a logical way to deal with things that lack merit which would otherwise destroy the utility of the community without an unrealistic amount of unfun labor which neither unpaid moderators nor users are willing to provide to maintain a subreddit. There are 330M reddit users and for most modest communities most others are on average are undesirables whose communities stand to muddy up yours and ruin it for the people that enjoy it because the average net value of a human being is debatable. You are asking for people to do more manual labor they are unwilling to do in order to make it easy for you to contribute while ignoring the fact that the average redditor would be a net negative if they joined an average decent community. In fact let me go further. The value of the very person who wont read the conventions of a subreddit before posting is probably on average much worse than average. This isn't a value judgment on you. Averages don't speak to individuals but what you are asking is illogical on net.
- rukshn 6y agoBut isn’t that what makes HN community great? The community votes what’s best and what should be on front page HN is not blocking content on submission without checking For example I have been blocked by Reddit just because I was new to community. Not because I was spamming but posting something legitimate I believe natural selection can bring what’s good to the top and leave the spam behind I know it can be flawed but not as flawed as this
- michaelmrose 6y agoHacker News is I believe a community of approximately 5 million readers at present and far fewer commenters. https://www.newyorker.com/news/letter-from-silicon-valley/the-lonely-work-of-moderating-hacker-news https://www.newyorker.com/news/letter-from-silicon-valley/th... Dang says "The vast majority of logged-in users don't post and the vast majority of readers don't log in." https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9220098 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9220098 While hacker news is perfectly usable without a login reddit is pretty much crud without the ability to login and select subreddits and has a readership over 30x bigger. Meanwhile a given subreddit usually has a much much smaller readership but readers in subreddits with radically different standards may be attracted from time to time by posts that link to another subs posts or by a particular post becoming sufficiently popular. Unlike hacker news these subs also don't have professional moderators paid to maintain their communities. If you don't like how a certain topical sub is run you ought to run your own and manage it how you like and tell us how it went.
- michaelmrose 6y agoIn case it isn't clear many communities are much smaller communities than hacker news with a fraction of the moderator hours embedded in a community that is hundreds of times larger than the active hacker news community making the probability of drive by negative contribution by the larger community vastly easier and more likely.
