I have to say that I agree fully with this statement. We may not even recognise alien life if we see it, and the context in which our conversations occur may vary wildly from any alien species. We may share a universe teeming with intelligent life, but if that life takes 10000 years to metabolise a meal, and a decade to say "Good morning", there's very little chance we shall communicate meaningfully.
