If you truly wanted speed, why not Cap'n'Proto?

  It didn't exist yet. We were evolving from simple raw messages with all sorts of problems. The alternative was something custom again, with better support for schema evolution, but pb was convenient due to existing implementations in Python (system tests) and C# (UI).
