Facebook email is live
I fail to see any threads on this (am I blind?) so I will just start one.
- JCB_K 15y ago...since about 3 months.
- antihero 15y agoWhy on earth would you trust Facebook with your e-mails?
- phlux 15y agoBecause they are all a bunch of "dumb fucks" to use the words of the founder of Facebook
- yid 15y agoNo, you've got it wrong. He was referring to us.
- phlux 15y agoYeah - I was responding to "how can one trust facebook with email" -- because the users who would trust facebook are "dumb fucks" according to facebook's founder.
- ivan_ah 15y agoseriously -- this is a direct quote! http://www.businessinsider.com/well-these-new-zuckerberg-ims-wont-help-facebooks-privacy-problems-2010-5 http://www.businessinsider.com/well-these-new-zuckerberg-ims...
- emmett 15y agoWhy wouldn't you? What in specific are you afraid Facebook will do that Google would not?
- Malcx 15y agoChange my privacy preferences on a whim without my permission?
- emmett 15y agoThis is about using Facebook as your email account. Are you really claiming that it's a reasonable fear Facebook will somehow make your emails public? This seems like pure knee-jerk "facebook = privacy problem" thought to me. I can't imagine Facebook making your emails public any more than I can imagine Google doing it.
- Malcx 15y agoIt's a trust issue. One of those companies has repeatedly broken my trust on a very important issue, the other not. I know gmail scans my message contents for contextual advertising, but it would never surprise me if facebook subsequently sold my email address to advertisers based on the content of messages, both current and historical.
- thomasgerbe 15y agoWhy on earth would you trust PayPal/Mint/banks with money? Or Google with e-mail/search/browser data?
- Xuzz 15y agoConvenience. Facebook, for many people (myself somewhat included), has replaced email as the primary method of staying in touch. When email is only being used for website signups and a few similar, non-primary tasks, merging it into what you use all the time makes a reasonable amount of sense. (Honestly, but not part of the point above, I don't have any issues trusting Facebook and Google with my data. I find it much less likely they will be hit with a Sony than others, and any really private data I have wouldn't go into any hosted service.)
- noahth 15y agowhy on earth would you trust anyone with anything? not saying I'm retiring my gmail account, just that there are plenty of ways that it might make sense for certain cases, despite some folks' knee-jerk inclination to distrust this one particular company.
- Apocryphon 15y agoWill Facebook notification emails be sent to Facebook email accounts? Delicious.
- drivebyacct2 15y agoWhy? That doesn't make any sense. Email notifications are to remind you to come to Facebook to check out the content. If you view your email by coming to Facebook, you're already going to have seen the notification. Am I missing something?

- AdamTReineke 15y agoI still don't have the new Facebook messages... :-/
- zeedotme 15y agocan you try clicking on "messages" in facebook and seeing if that does anything?
- gbelote 15y agoHave you already claimed a facebook.com/username? I thought the same, but it seems like my username@facebook.com was already setup for me. Try sending yourself an email to @facebook.com (ideally from the email coupled to your FB account).
- kels 15y agoLIES! I don't have the link and I can't email an email address.
- yeahsure 15y agoIt's been months since this launched. I've had this for a quite a while myself.
- keltex 15y agoOwning your @facebook.com address makes it easier for friends and family who are not on Facebook yet to connect with you Hmmm... I'm quite sure that facebook will still "own your @facebook.com" address.
- HardyLeung 15y agoI have Facebook email for a while, and I find it incredibly hideous. I have already "trusted" Facebook to more things than I wanted, and I guess I'd hold on to my gmail which is at least operated by another company that is less evi... uh never mind.
- logermoore 15y agoWhy not just pay for an IMAP account at a provider that doesn't invade your privacy?
- brackin 15y agoI've had this since a week after it's announcement like November I think. I like that chat is integrated with messages but I don't use it like an email account.
- blackRust 15y agoWhile this is a great move from Facebook from 'getting everyone on our platform' POV I find it hideous and disgusting. The interface is crap. It offers no folders/labels, no outside contacts (not sure?) and is a lock in system. Not only that, it doesn't bring anything new to email. Value added? None. Just more lock-in, propriety, FBI-friendly BS. I can't wait for Diaspora to be stable and public. Long live FOSS and the revolution! EDIT: Yes can send email but will include your profile info. Gee thanks! Just what I wanted! Also Spam? Also note that my post is intentionally agressive, I hate the 'Facebook attitude'.
- logermoore 15y agoThe combination of Facebook's blatant disregard for privacy and American authorities' wide access to snoop means that I won't be using Facebook email.
- kmavm 15y agoAnd has been for months. See the announcement here, which originally went up in November. https://www.facebook.com/blog.php?post=452288242130 https://www.facebook.com/blog.php?post=452288242130
