Another Arrest, and Jail Time, Due to a Bad Facial Recognition Match
- mytailorisrich 6y agoIt's not an issue with facial recognition. It's an issue with police and judicial procedures. Blaming the tool makes no more sense than blaming the hammer for a nail in the wrong spot...
- grumio 6y agoMay as well blame a spam filter for letting a phishing email through. The weakest link is human judgement. I wish NYT used a headline like "Another Arrest, and Jail Time, Due to police trusting flawed facial recognition and not doing enough due diligence before arresting"
- LatteLazy 6y agoHow many people have been arrested correctly based on this tech? How does that compare to people looking at photos/suspects? If it's better, this is an improvement even if its not perfect... >The detective compared Mr. Parks’s New Jersey state I.D. to the fake Tennessee driver’s license and agreed it was the same person So there was also some human error in the ID then... Interestingly London police (The Met) have a special group of people who do this job manually and are considered very good. I wonder how the AI vs them vs the average panes out...
- treeman79 6y agoWell there is the normal guy redneck drivers license guy. https://m.imgur.com/gallery/uqmUs https://m.imgur.com/gallery/uqmUs
- MikeUt 6y ago> How many people have been arrested correctly based on this tech? How does that compare to people looking at photos/suspects? The New York Times does not consider that information relevant.
- seesawtron 6y ago>So there was also some human error in the ID then... Most of these systems only alert the agencies about possible persons of interest. In the end its the "human" that makes the decision/error but that part doesn't make the story sexy.
