China’s Drive to Make Semiconductor Chips Is Failing
- mark_l_watson 6y agoNo doubt that US sanctions are causing them problems. While I think it will be a long time before China can fab their own 5nm chips, I would be surprised if they don’t quickly get to where they can make inferior but still serviceable CPUs, memory, GPUs, etc. It would seem like very poor execution to not make this a priority. I am in the USA, and I wish that we were more self-sufficient but unfortunately we are not as motivated because probably no one can mess with our supply chains.

US semiconductor manufacturers would have had a long and prosperous time selling billions of dollars worth of semiconductors to Huawei and other Chinese companies. China won't make up its lack of semiconductor manufacturing for a few years to come. But when their time comes, their newer fabs will easily undercut the prices of their previous US monopoly suppliers. And the US semiconductor industry will go the way of all of the other previous 'outsourced to China' industries.
