It will be very interesting to see how Norways coastal highway project turns out.[1] They plan to bridge and tunnel some massive fjords, some >1km deep, similar to the Straight of Gibraltar (~900m max depth). Plans are in the works for floating pontoon bridges as well as submerged tunnels. Depending on which solutions they choose and what their findings will be, if it works out when built an actual road/train connection between the continents could become - at least technically - feasable.
