I think the author conflates simplification of the whole codebase of a 3D rendering engine with the simplification of its architecture. Of course, complex image effects and arcane optimisation techniques will bloat the code, but real time ray tracing will allow throwing away whole series of hacks and tricks used now to produce believable image. The rendering pipeline will become much simpler in terms of stages.
- dahart 6y agoAgreed, and it’s also conflating engineering cost with the cost of making games. The big benefit of using physically based rendering architectures isn’t saving engineering time, it’s saving artist time not having to fiddle with tuning each ad-hoc effect individually. It seems to also somewhat discount the increases in realism and fidelity we are getting in the same dev time as before.
